Award for Operation Relentless involvement

The Drop Inn has WON an Award for it's initiatives to improve public confidence and safety during operation Relentless 2009!! With in a week of joining this operation the Staff and young people at The Drop Inn cleaned up an act of graffiti vandalism to the Belper Skate Park. There was racist graffiti all over the Skate Park, which was believed to have been done early in the day. The Drop Inn team alerted the police, council and the press and set off with their safer neighborhoods anti graffiti kit to clean it up. Three hours of cleaning and the Skate Park was all clear of racial graffiti, then the council came to re-paint the last of the mess the graffiti paint had left. Thank You to all the young people and staff involved, and Thank You for this award!

cater for the Skater update

Unfortunately the construction of an indoor skate park had been postponed which was largely down to the priority of other events and also finalising the designs. The final designs have now been drawn up so all going well the materials can be ordered now and construction could start in a week! The latest design from the young people will definitely get a lot of attention once constructed! It's a really exciting project so we'll keep everyone up to date with the progress! We have also thought up some names and potential logo's for the indoor skate park. It's going to be so cool!

Thank you,
Tom.

Whitemoor Centre Visit

I am delighted to say that the visit to white moor day care center was certainly a memorable experience for everyone that attended. we started with a presentation and a short role play session delivered by the police to show "hate crime" situations that may arise in everyday life, and how these can be avoided/ tackled.
This then lead onto a heart felt performance from members of white moor theatre group following the story of a character born with down-syndrome, and how their life was affected by "hate crime" and the general stereo-types that follow.

At lunch time we were provided with a choice of three meals including; Chicken tikka with rice, Jacket potato with salad, or a bean-chili.

After lunch, Andrea lead a presentation for the Drop Inn, explaining what we provide as a youth center, projects we have run amongst the community, Issues we face, and a video of the recent inter-generational project from Andrea's "linking lives" work.
So far the day had consisted of "sit and watch" activities, so we decided to take it a step further with an interactive drum session in which The drop inn provided white moor members with various percussive instruments. This activity reached far further than every one of our expectations. With a smile on every face and a vibrant energy amongst the center, we continued to perform with "poi" and the circle percussion. Our activity was so successful that the police decided to cancel their quiz activity and let us carry on with our inclusion work. Jasper provided well know chart songs with his guitar, while the rest of the room participated with drumming, dancing, tai-chi, break-dancing, or just a pleasant sing along. It really was a fantastic experience.

We were thanked at the end by the police, staff from white moor, and, one member from white moor stepped to the mic to give a heart touching personal thank you from himself and the rest of the members.
One staff member said "Thank you so much for your time, I don't think you realize how much this means to them. It's the happiest I've seen them all year"

It really was a rewarding day to see a smile put on everyone's face. We look forward to future inclusion work bringing communities together.

Game-on Tournament

The Game-On tournament was a really good atmosphere! We had a pretty good turn out for the first one. Each person that arrived and paid entrance got a ticket which gets them £1 off anything at The Game-On store on King Street, Belper!

This poster was put all over town, with the basic information about the tournament. This Games tournament was a first for Belper on this scale and definitely a first for the Drop Inn and Game-On. We basically converted the Drop Inn into a giant arcade, the atmosphere was amazing as you walked around. There was so many different games going on at one time!

This was the tournament break down on the second poster. Showing which ages category will be playing what game.

The projector that had skate on it swapped for Need for speed Shift later on as the crowd changed. On the other T.V's that were set up there was also the chance to test some of the latest released games like left 4 dead 2!

Guitar hero was set up for the entire duration, only to be upgraded by the full band kit. This screen was used as the back ground music which created such a nice atmosphere. The other main speakers from our sound system were used for this screen, so the quality of sound was the best for this music based game! It was a great experience!

Fifa 10 was the first tournament to be set up with more people wanting to compete on it. There was a few people saying thegame was more interactive with it being played on a cinema sized projection screen. This game was later replace for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 for the over 18's tournament. This screen also had the base bins from the Frankenstein sound system so it sounded brilliant. As you walked around you could hear the thundering base from this room!

FireWerks

This was the Drop Inn's idea of and alternative Fireworks display. We did the eclipse Firework display last year and wanted to do something completely different. We booked some professional fire performers in to perform a short impact fire show.

They were spinning fire staffs, nun-chucks and breathing fire. It was only a short 10-15 minute show but was really entertaining and something a bit different from the usual fireworks everyone else does. Thanks to Rowland and Gritz! We also had our usual bonfire night BBQ which was very tasty!
